The Rundown: Rio Pourcel

Dallas has earned national attention with the likes of Crit Life, Post Malone, and The Outfit, TX. The Triple D has a hotbed of talent in the city and one of their X-Factors is Rio Pourcel. Pourcel caught our attention with his interview with Say Cheese TV. The interview spoke about a rumored affiliation with Drake's OVO crew, but it led to MLM being intrigued by his smokey yet enticing sound.

The hypnotic vibes that Pourcel delivers is similar to PartyNextDoor but at the same time it's defined by a signature Texas sound. The Mississippi by the way of Dallas native has crafted music that fits his visuals perfectly. This has given him the upper hand when it comes to grabbing more listeners ears and eyes and this is the primary reason why he's on The Rundown.

We at MLM recently talked to Pourcel about his music, making videos, his love for anime and more.

How’s Your Modern Life?

I'm in the great state of Texas so my Modern life is going pretty good haha.

What are three words to describe your sound?

I would say honest, different, and trill.

Being from Dallas what are some things that are related to the city that tie into the aesthetic of your music?

From the beautiful scenery to the the women its a lot of different mixes. I love the fact that everyone seems so inspired to work and reach their dreams from hood rappers and indie bands, to new small town business owners. The art scene plays a big part as well in my music, i can seriously talk about art work all day.

Your music delivers a powerful yet a smooth delivery. How do you go about choosing your instrumentals before recording?

I'm very inspired by Kanye West, so some tracks that that really touch me I love to sample and put my own twist on. Also a lot of instrumentals are sent to me by great producers. I make some of my own beats as well, but picking the right beat is crucial to expressing my self on every track. Its one of those "when you hear it" you just know its feels right type moments.

Another powerful point of your delivery is your videos. What are three components that makes your videos mesh with the songs you record?

First would be it Have to be in slow motion haha, I just love the slow motion look. The next would have to be the color grading. I take color grading very serious cause it make be a "make or break" deal for the video. Last it has to has emotions so that the viewer can actually feel the message of the song.

You like to sample a lot of alternative records in your songs. Who are some of your favorite alternative groups you like to listen to ?

I grew up playing Journey alot so that really helped open my mind to different types of music. My favorite alternative group as of lately hands down would be Years & Years, from songwriting to the music that band is Amazing! Other favorites of mine would be Flight Facilities, Little Dragon, Vance Joy, Panama, Passion Pit, We are Trees, and too many more to name haha.

The Dallas music scene is growing and coming together with the likes of Post Malone, The Outfit TX, Crit Life, and more. How do you feel about the growth of the city and how it can help your music?

I love the fact that Dallas artist are uniting for the good. Dallas has so many talented musicians that are getting noticed and not getting noticed. I feel it help my music by putting out more positive vibes to encourage people that is ok to be different and not to worry about what people think of you.

What are the positive attributes about being from Dallas? What are the negatives about being from Dallas?

I'm originally from Mississippi, but sold my car, music equipment, camera equipment, and almost everything else 6 months ago to come here to follow my dreams.

The positive things is I love the fact a lot of people I came across are very passionate about reaching your goals just like me and things like that really motivates me. Also things like seeing different races come together I just love that feeling, cause being from Mississippi it was Very rare to see sights like that haha. The negative would probably be the traffic and the heat, I hate both haha.

How is a recording session with Rio Pourcel?

A recording session with me would basically be very chill. Usually before every time I record I watch anime, specifically my favorite "High School of the Dead" or the classic "DBZ" or any other one that im in the mood to watch. I love anime haha. Then ill just vibe out and channel my emotions into the track. Being honest with yourself is the key.

What are three things you like to carry on a daily basis?

My canon camera, my phone, and my laptop.

What are three things that a lady needs to have to be trill like you?

Haha I would say she would have to have a goal in life and cant be lazy about trying to achieve it. No one likes a lazy female. Next, she would have to have some sort of a good fashion sense, even making clothes from a thrift store look like the perfect outfit for her. Last, she would have to love anime, be honest about herself, and love different types of music. If she rolls up and smoke then that's just a plus haha.

I love the fact that Dallas artist are uniting for the good. Dallas has so many talented musicians that are getting noticed and not getting noticed. I feel it help my music by putting out more positive vibes to encourage people that is ok to be different and not to worry about what people think of you.
